Walmart Wednesday/ PINspiration: Modgepodge Letters

This week's Walmart Wednesday are these white wooden letters from the craft section of Walmart. I added some scrapbook paper to them using this Modgepodge tutorial I found on Pinterest to create our last name at the front door.

I like that we have a "hi" in our name so I push those letters to the front so they greet whoever enters.

Unfortunately, my Walmart was missing two letters.

It didn't really bother me. I've just been adding seasonable objects around the same size to fill in the blanks.

I realize this would drive a lot of Type-A folks absolutely nuts. In fact, I'm sure MOST of my house would drive a Type-A person nuts. I like color, and mismatch, and eccentricity which keeps things looking a bit haphazard, but in my opinion, happy.

Anyway, the above is some potted herbs from the summer.

For fall I traded the herbs out for a pumpkin and some flowers. I also covered my S with scrapbook paper.

Now that it is getting closer to the holidays, I've replaced the letters with jars of small ornaments.

Easy peasy!

Walmart Wednesday 14: Baby Style

Okay, it's actually just a post I wrote last week so that it would pop up this week while I'm getting my French on in Montreal.

Just picture me pretending I'm Celene Dion, while eating tons of bagels (supposedly the best in the world- although I'm sure some New Yorkers would disagree), and ooogling all the un-Walmart-y stores my heart desires!

Okay back to this post, brought to you by the baby clothes aisle at Clarenville's very own Walmart.

Let's zero in on some details, shall we?

Sparkly, crocheted flowers on the sweater,

some heart pockets on the butt of these jeans (you know, for her little baby wallet),

and of course, my favorite part, these sweet lamb-y faces on these soft fleece booties.

Well done, Walmart.

Walmart Wednesday 13: Halloween Decor

Sorry about the radio silence, folks. We've got teeth popping up in this house, along with some colds, and an upcoming trip to Montreal that requires heaps of paperwork. My poor 31 days of Spanish project is languishing in the back of my mind, and I have a few crafty projects sitting on my camera begging to be uploaded.

So I'm anticipating some bare bones blogging the next two weeks.

Anyways, I decided to check out the Halloween decoration section at Walmart this week.

I fell in love with this creepy crow feather wreath and this sparkly plastic pumpkin. I decided to use it as a centerpiece in my kitchen.

I LOVE THIS!

I love Halloween. I wish I had an excuse to dress up, but at least I have Kirby and the kiddo to deck out.

I wanted to post some pictures of my cat in Florida, just because he seems to go with this Halloween-y post. And he's cute. And I miss him.

Walmart Wednesday 12: Hair, there and everywhere

I haven't had a haircut in over a year.

There are a number of reasons why this is the case (not really knowing where to go get a haircut in this town, no one to watch the baby while I go, general apathy and laziness).

Last time I was home I decided to go get it cut, since it was well past my shoulders. When I measured it, I was a half inch shy of the Locks of Love requirement, so I figured I may as well wait a bit longer.

I like the way long hair looks when it is all wild and curly like this:

 But that requires air drying, and there is nothing that feels grosser to me than cold wet hair on my neck and back.

Yes, I could blow dry it too, but that takes time, effort, coordination and muscular forearms.

I would totally play the mom card and say I don't have time for hair care with the baby, but the truth is I never made time for blowdrying when I was childless, freewheeling, footloose and fancy free, so why on earth would I make time for it now that I get a precious hour of alone time everyday?

 So my hair usually goes up in a severe wet bun so that I don't have to feel it or think about it.

I think pulling my hair back like this for twenty seven years is causing my hairline to recede.

I'm not all that concerned though, because I can totally rock a wig.




Why am I rambling on and on about my hair?

Because this week's Walmart Wednesday post is inspired by my desire to make my wet pony tail or bun look prettier with these...

Yes they will add approximately 30 seconds to my comb, pull back, and tie in a knot morning hair routine, but I'm willing to make sacrifices for these babies!

Good job Walmart!

Walmart Wednesday 11: Studs

I'm a fan of dangly earrings, but since my baby has learned to grab things, they are gathering dust on my dresser. I just don't want to get my earlobes ripped.

That's okay, though because I am loving stud earrings lately. I recently purchased these from guys from Nordstroms when I was home a few weeks ago.

I figured why not continue growing the collection with this week's Walmart Wednesday and I found this $8 set in the juniors department.

Okay, the "diamond" and the "gold" studs are a little tacky, but I really love the enamel looking flowers.

I can't wait to add them to my rotation, and my earlobes can remain safe from "rippage" which isn't a word, but I really do wish it was.

Walmart Wednesday 10: Bath Robe

I wandered around Walmart for a long time today before I found this week's Walmart Wednesday winner...

Ta da!

Twenty bucks with a fleecy lining and a fun plaid print. Because I'm so short, it will fit me longer and keep me warmer than it might the taller teenagers it is meant to fit.

I had a pink Lacoste bathrobe I got as a wedding gift. I used it to death and finally threw it away last year when the alligator on the sleeve started falling off. I loved that thing.

In other news, I'm entering a blogging challenge sponsored by Nesting Place where she challenges you to write about a single topic for 31 days in a row.

I decided to use it as an opportunity to focus on my attempts to practice Spanish everyday.

Walmart Wednesday 9: I'm Sorry Gift

It's Walmart Wednesday! I could not find anything pretty, but I did enjoy the amazingly quick photo service our particular Walmart provides. They printed four 8x10s in about seven minutes, which would never happen in a Walmart in the states.

My husband and I have been squabbling more than usual lately. I felt guilty about not being nicer to my sick, hard working, weary husband so I made him a little tear off calendar for his office at work.

It's a countdown to the start of Florida Gator football season. I figured what better way to show my love to the hubs than by combining the two things he loves most in the world:  the Florida Gators and his baby girl!

Walmart Wednesday 8: Velvety Slippers

This week's find is a $10 pair of velvety flats.

They come in a lot of fun colors, but none in my size which has increased to size huge since pregnancy.

They are soft enough to embroider, if I was talented enough to know how to embroider things.

I would make them look like these $400 Stubbs and Wootton slippers.

Walmart Wednesday 6: London Pillow

What is Walmart Wednesday? Find out how I started the pursuit of pretty in the only place to shop in my town here.

I'm on a bit of a spending freeze after a slew of DIY fails, so this Walmart Wednesday post is just a camera phone picture of the prettiest thing I could find in the store this week.

It's a London pillow, inspired by the Olympics I'm guessing. It's kind of cheesy but I could see it working on a dark leather couch or in a little boy's nursery.

Anyone find anything pretty at their local Walmart lately?

Walmart Wednesday 5

This is a quickie, but I'm so delighted with this week's Walmart Wednesday post.

I found these dish towels for $1 a piece at Walmart.

The colors and pattern are so happy and eclectic. They remind me of something I'd find at Anthropologie (How I miss you, Anthropologie!) like these or these.

Okay on further review, they aren't quite as pretty as those, but they are also 1/24th of the price so yay for fiscal responsibility!

Walmart Wednesday 4

Okay, this is last week's Walmart Wednesday post.

I found these kind of tacky looking bird decals, but they were by far the prettiest things Walmart had to offer last week.

I'm redoing my dining room. Here is how these birds look surrounding a mirror I bought from Kirkland's six years ago.

Not too bad. I'm renting a house so the dark dramatic walls are going to have to stay dark and dramatic. That is a bit of chandelier in the corner.

Is my opinion of Walmart changing thanks to this Walmart Wednesday exercise?

Not really, but it is good practice for making lemonade out of lemons.

Walmart Wednesday 3

Walmart was a zoo yesterday.

I couldn't figure it out. How could there be no carts available at two pm on a Tuesday?

So I asked the girl at the register.

"Everyone is trying to get their fix since we won' be open tomorrow. You think this is bad. The day after Clarenville Day is worse!"

Clarenville Day?

From what I could find, Clarenville Day is a town-wide holiday where everything closes to celebrate...the founding of the town? Some historic event I'm not aware of because I'm an obtuse American?

I don't know. I'm having a hard time finding any information about it online, and I don't want to disturb my neighbors on Clarenville Day.

The only information I could discover was from my husband's secretary. She didn't know what Clarenville Day celebrated, but she said that the reason Clarenville Day is on a Wednesday instead of a Friday or Monday is so that the people of Clarenville attend the event instead of spending the long weekend RVing elsewhere on the island.

Clarenvillians love their RVs. And motocycles. And ATVs. And basically all transportation toys.

So what did I find at Walmart this week? Sadly not much.

I tried to get a whole outfit put together, but everything was ill-fitting. So, as usual, when things aren't fitting me well, I go clothing shopping for Ellie, because everything looks cute on her.

But even the baby section was slim pickins'.

So I bought her some pajamas for a few months from now. They are three for $12 and I love them!

She already has quite a few in her current size.

They are soft, close fitting, and best of all they zip up so there is no snap fumbling in the dark during a late night diaper change.

Here's hoping for better luck next week!

Walmart is providing me the opportunity to channel this look with their $12 George scarves.

This is me pretending to be a charming waif like girl with a scarf.

Sadly, this is the best picture I could come up with. I forgot my giant sunglasses. I'm sorry that you can barely see the scarf.

On the plus side, you can also barely see my very unwaif-like body and my post-pregnancy extra chins so call yourself lucky. I know this is a good picture because one eye only looks slightly larger than the other instead of triple the size of the other. And that bizarre strand of hair on my forehead- strategically covering a zit. Yay me!

I walk into Walmart with the expectation of finding cute things in roomy aisles at reasonable prices. I find crappy things, in dirty aisles at insanely low prices.

Sometimes the insanely low prices trick me into believing that Walmart is great!

And then I go to check out and get in a thirty-person line because for some reason only two check-out lanes are open.

I tell myself I’ll never shop there again.

And then I move to a small Canadian town that only has a Walmart.

So I decided to give myself an attitude adjustment and attempt to find something delightful about my local Walmart every Wednesday.
